Facebook Ads (including Instagram ads) can be easily connected to Google Data Studio using a number of 3rd party connectors. Because Facebook is not a Google product however, there is no native connector (built by Google). In our experience, the 3rd party connectors are more than adequate for grabbing all the FB Ad data that you need to report on, in the format you need it.

In this post, we’ll cover options and considerations for finding the best Facebook Ad connector for Google Data Studio.

Choosing the Best Facebook Ad Connector

We love Facebook as an ad network. In fact, it’s proven to have some of the best targeting of all networks which make it a viable prospecting and branding channel for many businesses. In considering options to better report on your Facebook Ads efforts, here are some key points for Data Studio integration.

  • Dimension/Metrics Reporting Needs: The Facebook Ads API is loaded with data points.  Not all connectors include all these data points, although we typically find each to get to the job done just fine. Note that each connector offers similar, but not always the same dimensions and metrics from the Facebook Ad network.
  • Roll-Up Facebook Ad Accounts: Most Facebook Ad connectors do offer the ability to grab multiple accounts at once (to allow for roll-up reporting) but not all do this without the need for data blending in data studio. For example, Supermetrics offers this blending built in where Power My Analytics would require you to blend after the fact.
  • Direct Connection vs Data Warehousing: We’ve connected hundreds of facebook ad accounts to hundreds of dashboards and have learned one thing. Directly connecting to the facebook ad platform (as Supermetrics does) is typically okay as long as you are connecting to 1-10 accounts at a time. Past that, data warehouse options should be considered as reports take a while to load with direct connections. For most though, the direct connections seem fine.

Final Thoughts

Free trials are the way to go here. For almost all connectors listed above, there is a free trial to allow you to connect and begin pulling data. We always recommend setting up your reports during this trial to make sure you can get the dimensions and metrics you need.
